I am in Newark for a couple of weeks and wondered which way to ride the ECT for the nicest scenery and maybe best trail. I mean which way has the most paved trail and and which has the most dirt/hard pack trail.

I am considering starting near Weedsport and going west, but am open to starting other places to go.

Look at this map: https://empiretrail.ny.gov/map

You'll see that most of the solid green lines are east of Utica. The majority of the trail is stone dust to the west of that. As far as scenery it's all pretty. The more interesting town centers seemed to be in the west to my mind. Fairport is one. The paved sections in the Rochester area are pretty bumpy from roots heaving it up. The Erie Canal park in Camillus is worth a visit even if you don't ride through that section on your bike.
