I would like to have a go at riding the Erie Canal bike trail this summer, if only from Buffalo to Syracuse. I have a Seven titanium road bike with fairly thin tires. I understand that the trail is a portion gravel and paved. Would the ride be comfortable on a road bike?

The section you are planning on doing is probably the least friendly to narrow tires. The section from Syracuse to Albany is more completely paved though there is a section on exiting the city which is 36 miles of stone dust path which might be a bit harsh on narrow tires. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Old_Erie_Canal_State_Historic_Park
I did the whole bike trail end to end, in sections, on 42 mm tires and was very happy with that tire size. There were certainly others doing it on narrower ones. You'll have to get someone of those to weigh in on this.
